What is Ho’oponopono & its Practical Uses

Ho’oponopono

Understandably, meditation and reflection require sitting in a quiet and serene environment to gain focus. This is true. However, considering our tight daily schedules, not everyone has the time and space to sit for several minutes to reflect and meditate. So, does that mean you can’t harness the power of the law of attraction? With Ho’oponopono, the answer is yes… you can.

Ho’oponopono is an effective and easy-to-practice reflection – or better still, correction – a technique that doesn’t take more than a few minutes. More importantly, you can practice the method within any space and at any time.

Despite working in a busy routine, you can take advantage of Ho’oponopono to perform mental cleansing, stabilize your emotions, and even attract a healthy relationship. It’s undoubtedly an effective method to accept responsibility and “move on.” To learn more about Ho’oponopono, you should read this article to the end.

What is Ho’oponopono?

In the Hawaii culture, Ho’oponopono is a common practice to forgive oneself, purify the body, and remove bad memories. The word “Ho’oponopono” literarily refers to “make things right” or “correct a mistake.” Thus, the concept is about putting things back in order; one is having a mental cleansing. Although some native Hawaiians often chant Ho’oponopono like a prayer, it’s something much more. The practice is a useful tool for amending our consciousness and relationships with others.

Practicing Ho’oponopono helps express our feelings openly and release ourselves from emotional and mental bondages. When you practice Ho’oponopono, you’ll gain the strength and courage to reflect, repent, forgive, love, and show gratitude. The phenomenon allows you to use special words to reveal your emotions and exercise genuine forgiveness. This works because the concept of Ho’oponopono is based on the fact that everyone is responsible for his/her reality.

With our feelings, thoughts, and actions, we can determine what happens in life. An excellent way to start is by correcting all errors (negative vibes) within ourselves. By so doing, we’ll be correcting what happens outside our beings as well. So, using the concept of Ho’oponopono to cleanse your consciousness will help attract another clean consciousness. Interestingly, you don’t need special knowledge to practice Ho’oponopono or a special place of practice. All you need is to know the simple techniques to follow.

How does Ho’oponopono work?

The basis of Ho’oponopono is that everyone experiences reality individually through the mind. As humans, we are capable of influencing what we see, hear, feel, and the people we meet. Thus, we participate in everything that occurs around us. Everyone is responsible for how he/she feels and thinks. And with our thoughts and feelings, we can create solutions or problems for ourselves, depending on our thoughts. This is possible because our thoughts help attract the same energy that it generates to the universe.

So, whenever we create these problems, Ho’oponopono comes handy in rectifying the situation by providing solutions. The phenomenon can solve the problem through honest repentance, forgiveness, love, and being grateful. These four actions are achieved by using the following four phrases: “I am sorry,” “forgive me,” “I love you,” and “I am grateful.” Repeating these phrases helps eliminate negative energy and bad memories, then allows us to enjoy a renewed positive energy with gratefulness. In short, the concept is a problem-solving tool from within.

How to practice Ho’oponopono

As mentioned earlier, anyone can practice Ho’oponopono. And more excitingly, it can be performed in different locations and at any time. However, if you are a newbie to the concept, you can start with a five-minute Ho’oponopono meditation to master it. Here is how to practice the method:

  • Find a quiet place and cross your leg while sitting.
  • Close your eyes and ensure that your back is straight.
  • Let the head aligns with your spine and loosens your jaw.
  • Take deep breaths and count to four as you inhale.
  • Exhale the breath with four counts
  • Now, repeat the mantra, “I am sorry.” “Please forgive me.” “I love you.” “Thank you.”
  • Be conscious of the new feelings of relaxation and compassion.
  • Sustain the exciting feelings.
  • Keep the natural feeling for a few more minutes.
  • Get ready to stop by becoming conscious of your environment.

And you have just performed Ho’oponopono meditation with ease. Remember that you don’t need to be a religious person before you can practice. Also, you don’t need any deity. All you need is yourself and your consciousness in a calm environment. Once you become accustomed to the process, you can do it in any place.

Ho’oponopono Techniques

For better understanding and clarity, let’s discuss the four techniques of Ho’oponopono. As explained earlier, practicing Ho’oponopono involves four different phrases: Repentance, forgiveness, love, and gratitude. Below is a description of how the phases work:

Phase 1: Repentance

This involves feeling and saying sorry for an error or mistake committed. It would be best if you accepted the responsibility, even when others might have contributed to the loss. By taking full responsibility, you’ll feel sorry and sad. That’s okay. However, don’t just feel it; you should also say it out genuinely to yourself. Advisably, you can use “I am sorry” or “I acknowledge that I am responsible for the xoxoxo problem in my life.” Once you become accustomed to accepting your mistakes, forgiving yourself will become easy.

Phase 2: Forgiveness

At this stage, saying “Please forgive me” matters a lot. Understandably, you apologize to yourself, but you don’t have to worry about who you are apologizing to. Say the words repeatedly and forgive yourself.

Phase 3: Love

After accepting your fault and forgiving yourself, you can now express love to yourself. Start by saying, “I love you” to your body, God, and everything about yourself. Please don’t be shy to say it out, repeatedly, and feel it.

Phase 4: Being Grateful

The last step is the gratitude stage, where you should thank yourself. It involves saying “Thank you” with all sense of honesty. Also, you can thank the universe and God. Endeavor to repeat the mantra to master the attitude of gratitude.

Recommendable Phrases to Free Painful Memories

Ho’oponopono is a flexible practice for mental cleansing and emotional stability. For this reason, you don’t necessarily have to use two words only to state your intentions. You can repent or forgive yourself with different statements, depending on how you are inspired. You can stick with a few words at the early stage, as stated in the section above. However, with time, you’ll learn how to personalize the words. To make personalization easier, you can combine your inspired statements with the keywords of techniques discussed above. Below are some examples:

“I accept responsibility for the challenges in my life.”

“I seek divine forgiveness, and I’m ready to move on.”

“I am at peace with myself and the world.”

“Despite the challenges, I am grateful for my body and to the universe.”

“Divinity cleanses what troubles me, and I am becoming better.”

“I release myself from troubles and find peace within myself and with others.”

“I am thankful for everything in my past and present life and everyone in my life.”

As you continue to practice further, you’ll get to express yourself more. However, ensure that the key techniques of Ho’oponopono reflect in your statement.
